So what will the money be used for?
Almost all the funds raised will be used for programs. There will be a minor
initial expenses, (which will not exceed $4,000) to legally and administratively
establish the program. You see there is no place where something for nothing
exists, really.
And by doing this it will allow your donations to be tax-deductible,
especially nice for those that plan a larger donation. Beyond that, 100%
of the funds raised will be used to make grants to microlending organizations.
The money will be used to help
emerging "micropreneurs" in developing countries. We will do this by
making grants
to organizations that make microloans.
Micropreneurs and Microloans?
Micropreneurs are ultra-first-stage entrepreneurs in developing
countries. They come in all shapes and sizes with many different kinds of needs.
Some examples of micropreneurs:
A women in Guatemala who runs a fruit stand,
who needs working capital to
expand
her
selection;
A furniture
maker
in Honduras
who wants to start an export business;
A farmer in Nigeria who needs a
pump to irrigate her fields;
A householder in Nepal who needs a new cell
phone to establish shared-phone service for her village; and,
A "mobile
internet service
provider "in Bangladesh who needs a generator and a bicycle
to deliver pedal-powered web access door-to-door.
Microloans are quite small - hence the name "micro"
- typically from
$100 to
$500 US,
as small as $5! They are usually paired with savings programs and financial
education.
Estimates are that each micro loan ultimately generates
jobs for up to five people. That means with one million dollars we raise can help start in the
neighborhood of 3,000 businesses and employ as many as 15,000 people. (And
now you know one of the reasons why we want one million books read by one million
entrepreneurs around the globe).
And that’s just the first time the money is lent.
You see, microloans are sustainable. Unlike traditional aid which requires
more and more money, and moves a program closer to its breaking point as each
person is recruited into the program—micro loans are paid back!
Since these are loans and not handouts,
the money is repaid to the lending organization which then loans money
to another round of entrepreneurs. Repayment
rates typically exceed 95% in the first year, and since the interest on the
loans covers the lending organizations’ operating expenses, this process
can continue indefinitely.
This Microloans For Sustainable Development program can work, but we do need

The third condition, and perhaps the easiest, is that
